Oh How I Love the Mountains

For as long as I can remember, I have loved the Appalachian mountains. My aunt and uncle took me along, with my brother and cousins, camping in the Smokies every summer from the time I was 6 until I was 15. I looked forward to this yearly trip to Elkmont campground more than a trip to a beach, to Disney and/or Six Flags combined.

The Little Pigeon River was my playground. My cousin and I would put our tubes in at the campground and my aunt would meet us in the car a mile or so downriver. Despite my shivery-nature, I braved the brisk water to enjoy the float.

Recently, my wife and I purchased a tiny cabin on the Nottely River, near Blairsville. And yes, you guessed it. I pump up an inner tube and float the river in the summer. I feel a joy and a freedom in the mountains. They feel like home.
