Something Old Something New Bridal Show @ Academy of Medicine

I'm excited to let you know that we'll be at the Something Old Something New Bridal Show this Thursday evening at the Academy of Medicine along with several other great wedding vendors. This will be a wonderful opportunity to see a gorgeous wedding venue -- the Academy of Medicine -- and to meet some wonderful florists, planners, caterers, DJs, travel agents, etc. Here are a few photos I took recently at the Academy of Medicine: Wedding Venue in midtown Atlanta

I'm an Atlanta wedding photographer who takes soulful, quirky and honest photos ...

I'm also an adventurous traveler and all-round nerd. I love to hike with my beagle/cattle dog Roux and best friend/spouse.

I was born in Atlanta, moved around a lot--30 cities and 5 states--and then came back.

After graduating from the Art Institute of Atlanta, I took a job at asmall newspaper in south Georgia, where I photographedhospital teas, pecan farmers, and beauty queens.

I photographed a biker funeral, death penalty protests andTed Bundy while interning with the Associated Press.

While a photographer for two dailies in Florida, I photographed Ronald Reagan, a train derailment and the dedication of a screened-in porch.

An unexpected life turn took me to Vermont where I fell in love with Bernie Sanders and on to Indiana, where I edited photos for a major daily, and nerded out getting a master’s and PhD.

After teaching photojournalism at colleges and universities in Florida, Indiana and Mississippi, I returned to Atlanta to earn myfifth degree--a Master's of Divinity.

My passion for storytelling with my camera and my interest in religious diversity led my to the field of wedding photojournalism.

I have documented weddings large and small, Unitarian and Pagan, indoors and out, Christian and Muslim, in backyards and in churches. The most exotic wedding I have photographed took place in Mexico and was officiated by aMayan shaman.

When I'm not photographing weddings, portraits or corporate events, I work on personal photo projects, visit friends in amemory-care home, and volunteer at a recovery center.

Recent Award-Winning Wedding Photos | Wedding Photographic Society

One of the organizations I belong to these days is the Wedding Photographic Society. The WPS is a "network of professional wedding & portrait photographers who come together to collaborate on photographic ideas, thoughts, and information in an attempts to elevate the artistic, technical, and business standards of the wedding photographic community." I've entered the first two WPS contests of the year and have won awards both times. Here are the latest award winners. This first photo (taken at a wedding in south Mississippi) took an award in the Artistic category.

Maggie and Tim's June Botanical Gardens Wedding

I've had a very busy Spring and early Summer, but thankfully have finally gotten around to posting a few photos from one my favorite weddings of the year -- Maggie and Tim's lovely June wedding at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. Nicole Fantz of Peachtree Weddings flawlessly coordinated the event from start to finish. Maggie's Decatur family and Emory friends and Tim's family from England and Cambridge friends came together for a wonderful celebration. The day was delightful, the gardens stunning, the dancing lovely, the cake delicious and the toasts hilarious.

Before she hired us Maggie told us she chose us for two reasons: "the incredible ability to anticipate a moment and capture true emotion, and the gorgeous composition of so many shots." And here's what she had to say in an e-mail after she saw the photos from her wedding. "We shared the pictures with our families and the wedding party, and you're getting rave reviews! I can't believe how stunning the pictures are. Thank you so so much to you and Sharon. I'll be spreading the word about how thrilled we are."

Cinco De Mayo Reception | Michelle and Allen

We had the privilege of photographing a lovely beach wedding in Long Beach Mississippi on Cinco de Mayo (that's the 5th of May for you gringos out there.) After an awesome wedding ceremony on the beach, the wedding party and guests headed to Oak Crest Mansion in Pass Christian for a delightfully fun reception. The theme was a mix of Cajun and Mexican. Food included gumbo and bread pudding. (The groom's cake was bread pudding ... what a great idea.) Here are a few favorites from the reception. One of these photos won an award in the Motion category in the Wedding Photographic Society's Quarter 2 contest. See if you can pick the winner.

Storm's a Brewin' at Mississippi Beach Wedding

we_2012_michelle_allen-2124-1.jpg

Early in May we were lucky enough to be invited to photograph the wedding of Michelle and Allen. One of Michelle's best friends from high school, Becka, was one of my students when I taught photojournalism at the University of southern Mississippi. Becka told Michelle she should hire us to photograph her wedding. Thanks Becka! What a fun wedding ... well, I should say two weddings. The first ceremony--a Persian Aghd--took place on Friday night.

The next day everyone headed for the sand in Long Beach, Mississippi where a storm was trying to blow in. It was actually rather nice to have the cloud cover for the wedding -- both for the cooling effect and for the quality of light created. Before the wedding began, the bride hid behind a cover of parasols. (You can see it from both angles above and below.) The grooms wore khaki pants and casual white shirts with sand dollar boutonniere.

Here are a few of our favorite photos from the day.

And I'm honored to report that this photograph of the kiss at the end of the ceremony won a Wedding Photojournalist Association award.

Michelle and Allen's Persian Aghd Ceremony in Mississippi

It's taken us a while, but we've finally gotten around to sharing ceremony and reception photos from the Persian Aghd we posted about earlier. What a fun ceremony. The bride gets to pretend like she doesn't hear the officiant who is asking her if she is ready for marriage. Guests are encouraged to say the bride is out picking flowers or enjoying the sunny weather or some such. The ceremony is one of the most playful I've ever experienced. The reception was filled with delightful moments as well. Family members throwing money and dancing with hankies and friends and family taking part in the "knife dance." Here are a few favorites from the ceremony and reception:

Erica and Jason's Album Design Party

Saturday afternoon I had the pleasure of celebrating an album design review with Erica and Jason. I decided to bring ice cream for the party. I chose Ben and Jerry's "Everything But The" flavor and a pint of plain vanilla. Aeo the tortoise-shell cat joined the party, but did not imbibe in the ice cream. After we three bipeds enjoyed a bit of both flavors, we retired to the living room to review the album on Erica and Jason's large screen TV. Here are a few of our favorite spreads:

Details from Persian Sofreh Aghd at Oak Crest Mansion in Pass Christian, MS

We had the pleasure of photographing a Persian Sofreh Aghd this past Friday night at a lovely mansion in Pass Christian. This is what we live for -- the opportunity to document diversity in all its forms. The photos below give you an idea of how elaborate the details were. We'll be posting again with photos that show the ceremony and fun to follow.
