My very first wedding

Seven years ago I had no idea that the photographs I took at my cousin Josh's wedding would lead to my current profession as a wedding photojournalist.I just wanted to take some nice photos as a gift to Josh and Carly. Even though they had hired a traditional wedding photographer, I felt I would be able to document what was happening in a way that would be potentially more memorable than the posed shots he would make. Two years later when Josh's sister Jamie got married, I was hired to photograph her wedding.

The photojournalistic approach won the day. .

An unexpected life turn took me to Vermont where I fell in love with Bernie Sanders and on to Indiana, where I edited photos for a major daily, and nerded out getting a master’s and PhD.

After teaching photojournalism at colleges and universities in Florida, Indiana and Mississippi, I returned to Atlanta to earn myfifth degree--a Master's of Divinity.

My passion for storytelling with my camera and my interest in religious diversity led my to the field of wedding photojournalism.

I have documented weddings large and small, Unitarian and Pagan, indoors and out, Christian and Muslim, in backyards and in churches. The most exotic wedding I have photographed took place in Mexico and was officiated by aMayan shaman.

When I'm not photographing weddings, portraits or corporate events, I work on personal photo projects, visit friends in amemory-care home, and volunteer at a recovery center.

Choosing your maid of honor: South Louisiana Wedding

Early on in my work as a wedding photojournalist I realized the importance of a good maid of honor. I had the privilege of photographing Kelly and Kyle's wedding at Oak Alley Plantation in Louisiana.

Soon after arriving to photograph Kelly getting ready, I was introduced to her maid of honor and best friend since childhood, Nicki. As I followed Kelly through the preparations, the ceremony and reception, I noticed how

If Kelly wasn't happy, Nicki made sure that changed fast. If Kelly was happy, Nicki was delighted. Nicki's enthusiasm for the loving connection that was about to be ceremoniously celebrated never wavered.

It's a Girl!

Our dear friends and neighbors, the Sussons, had a baby girl on Friday and we had the privilege of visiting Mom and baby in the hospital last night. Dad needed a lift to the hospital, so we packed up the car with an extra bench for the Susson mini-van and headed out. First we had to stop at a local grocery to buy balloons, cards, flowers, and all of Mom's favorite foods. Then we had to pretend to be family visiting from out of town to get into the hospital room after hours.

Finally, we saw and held the beautiful little girl. We witnessed overflowing parental love.

Who can blog without posting a picture of their dog? Barney Buggle Boy

Here's a recent one of my dog Barney. He's part lab and part something very friendly with an underbite. He's six.

I got him when he was a puppy from the local animal shelter. I actually knew him when he was with his mom at one of my friends' home. She was fostering the mother dog while she had pups, but of course ended up adopting the mom.

Barney's a sweetheart with a deadly tail. Watch out for that tail!

Here's a photo of my daughter-in-law Jess as she is "coming down the aisle" on the beach at Tybee Island. Photographing family is some of the most challenging and rewarding work we do. I feel lucky I had the opportunity to document this memorable moment.
