Piedmont Park Engagement Safari in the Rain | Atlanta Weddings

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of photographing Nicole and Patrick's Engagement Safari at Piedmont Park and San Francisco Coffee. The weather report predicted a 30 percent chance of showers and Nicole was concerned about the session. We had planned to photograph in Piedmont Park and maybe another park or two, but I decided we needed a backup plan. Nicole suggested San Francisco Coffee or Murphy's in Virginia Highlands. I called ahead to San Francisco Coffee for permission and they were kind enough to agree to a photo shoot that evening. (I didn't try Murphy's since it's a restaurant and I was pretty sure it would be swamped on a Saturday night.) She and Patrick later told me that the Virginia Highlands area reminds them of the part of town they lived in when they met in Cleveland, Ohio. So they really feel at home there. I asked Nicole to describe what she would be wearing, so I could buy an umbrella that would harmonize in color with her clothing, just in case rain was still falling during our shoot. Of course I ended up preferring the black-and-white photos, but that's just the old school photojournalist in me.

An unexpected life turn took me to Vermont where I fell in love with Bernie Sanders and on to Indiana, where I edited photos for a major daily, and nerded out getting a master’s and PhD.

After teaching photojournalism at colleges and universities in Florida, Indiana and Mississippi, I returned to Atlanta to earn myfifth degree--a Master's of Divinity.

My passion for storytelling with my camera and my interest in religious diversity led my to the field of wedding photojournalism.

I have documented weddings large and small, Unitarian and Pagan, indoors and out, Christian and Muslim, in backyards and in churches. The most exotic wedding I have photographed took place in Mexico and was officiated by aMayan shaman.

When I'm not photographing weddings, portraits or corporate events, I work on personal photo projects, visit friends in amemory-care home, and volunteer at a recovery center.

Event Photographer for Metro Atlanta Chamber Engagement Party

Atlanta Portrait Photography: Lori and Matt's Avondale Engagement Safari

Lori and Matt are getting married in October here in Atlanta. We wandered around the Avondale Estates neighborhood yesterday morning viewing the scenery, imbibing in some Ubran Grounds Coffee, saying Hello to some of Lori's old friends at the James Joyce Irish Pub and taking engagement portraits. Here are a few of my favorites from the day. Thanks to Mary Charles, who lives in the house Lori's grandmother used to own and has some awesome gardens, to the folks at Urban Grounds Coffee and at the James Joyce Irish Pub, for allowing us to take photos on their property.

Atlanta Wedding Photographer: Candice and Maxim's Urban Engagement Safari

I'm excited to share a few photos from yesterday's engagement safari with Candice and Maxim. Candice and I both graduated from the Candler School of Theology in 2009. She and Maxim met when she first moved to Atlanta to attend seminary. We started our engagement safari at Barley's Sports Bar in downtown. This is where Maxim took Candice on their first date, if you can call it a date. The say that they were both wearing sweats and are not sure if that should actually count as a date. The folks at Barley's were delighted to have us there for the photo shoot. A shout out to everyone at Barley's for being so cooperative.

After shooting natural light of them playing pool and posing in the pool hall, I pulled out the softbox for something a little more formal near the front of the bar. Not really all that formal, but then that's just not my style.

We left Barley's and walked a block or so to the corner of Ralph McGill and Juniper where there were some lovely urban sculptures I have been eyeing as great photo fodder for awhile. We ran into a few characters looking for a handout on the way there and back. One of them came right out and told us he was asking for a buck so he could get a shot. The other one offered to give us a tour of Atlanta from the perspective of a real Atlanta native. When I told him that my Dad was born in Atlanta, so that's makes me a second generation native, he started quizzing me about various Atlanta hotspots. I failed the quiz.

After our urban sculpture adventure, we hopped in our respective cars and drove to Centennial Park in downtown. We all commented on how nice the park is and how we hadn't really spent much time exploring it before. Candice and Maxim played in the fountain and posed in front of a sculpture and beside some nice light posts. We finished our urban safari in front of the World of Coke toasting Mr. Pemberton, the inventor of the concoction. Thanks to the Pembertons, Candlers and Woodruffs for all they've done for Atlanta and Emory University!

Andy Proposes - Karen Says "Yes" | Atlanta Engagement Photographer

My friend and classmate Andy Jones sent me an e-mail on Facebook a few weeks back asking if I would like to take photos of him as he proposed to his girlfriend Karen. I told him I would be delighted. We set about to arrange the surprise. Andy decided he would propose after a romantic picnic in Lullwater Park near Emory. I was given heads up on when and where the picnic would take place. I even had the chance to give Andy a bit of advice when he told me he was nervous about proposing.

After determining that Andy's nerves were getting the best of him, not because he was afraid Karen would say "No," but because he was afraid he "wouldn't do it right," I told him as long as he did it like Andy, she would be delighted.

He did it just like Andy, and Karen was delighted. As you can see in the following photos.

Andy Proposes - Karen Says "Yes" | Atlanta Engagement Photographer

I've been busy traveling and working lately and have a backlog of photos to share. Several weeks ago I took Jean and Kyle's engagement portraits at Piedmont Park. They showed up for our session a bit late after Kyle got stopped by the Atlanta police for not wearing a seat belt. So all you folks too tough for seat belts, beware. They save lives, too!

Jean and Kyle got married this past weekend, so expect more photos of this lovely couple in a few days.
