Kevin and Jamie's White House Party

Kevin and Jamie's Reception

Last fall, Kevin proposed to Jamie in the Free and Sovereign State of Baja California, a state in Mexico.

The couple returned home to Biloxi, Mississippi where they headed to the local courthouse for a quiet wedding.

And then came the party!

Close friends and family were invited to the White House in Biloxi to celebrate with Kevin and Jamie. And, wow, did folks have fun or what? See photos below, for evidence.

I'm an Atlanta wedding photographer who takes soulful, quirky and honest photos ...

I'm also an adventurous traveler and all-round nerd. I love to hike with my beagle/cattle dog Roux and best friend/spouse.

I was born in Atlanta, moved around a lot--30 cities and 5 states--and then came back.

After graduating from the Art Institute of Atlanta, I took a job at asmall newspaper in south Georgia, where I photographedhospital teas, pecan farmers, and beauty queens.

I photographed a biker funeral, death penalty protests andTed Bundy while interning with the Associated Press.

While a photographer for two dailies in Florida, I photographed Ronald Reagan, a train derailment and the dedication of a screened-in porch.

An unexpected life turn took me to Vermont where I fell in love with Bernie Sanders and on to Indiana, where I edited photos for a major daily, and nerded out getting a master’s and PhD.

After teaching photojournalism at colleges and universities in Florida, Indiana and Mississippi, I returned to Atlanta to earn myfifth degree--a Master's of Divinity.

My passion for storytelling with my camera and my interest in religious diversity led my to the field of wedding photojournalism.

I have documented weddings large and small, Unitarian and Pagan, indoors and out, Christian and Muslim, in backyards and in churches. The most exotic wedding I have photographed took place in Mexico and was officiated by aMayan shaman.

When I'm not photographing weddings, portraits or corporate events, I work on personal photo projects, visit friends in amemory-care home, and volunteer at a recovery center.

Grace 1720: Perfect for an Intimate Wedding

I often get asked by potential clients or wedding planners if I know of a nice venue for a small wedding or rehearsal dinner.

I’ve recommended quite a few places over the years.

Recently I added Grace 1720 in Peachtree Corners to that list. It made the list after I photographed a small wedding that took place in an upstairs private dining room.

My only disappointment that day … was that I couldn’t stay to share dinner with the bride and groom and guests. I had a prior commitment that kept me from enjoying what I could tell was going to be an amazing meal, (because the food looked beautiful and the crab cake appetizer I had was one of the best I’ve ever eaten.)

Having a small wedding? I’m happy to book wedding coverage in the 4-6 hour range, unlike most luxury wedding photographers.

Surprise! Wedding Photojournalist Association Diamond Awards

When the Wedding Photojournalist Association added a contest category for engagement photos, I wasn’t sure what to think.

Would the judges be looking for photographs that featured a couple perfectly posed in a beautiful landscape, like many of the popular engagement photos I’d seen?

I’m happy to report that’s not the case. Well, maybe a few photos that win fall into that category, but many are tighter shots of a couple laughing with each other or sharing coffee or just having fun together.

I’m honored to have had several of my photos chosen as award-winners. Here are a few of my favorites:

You can see the rest of the Diamond Award-winning photos I’ve taken here.

I’d love to talk with you about your engagement photos. Give me a call at 404 298 6263.

Delta Leadership Fellows at Emory's Goizueta Business School

In 2017 The Delta Airlines Foundation gave Emory's Goizueta Business School $3.5 million to start a leadership development program where MBA students learn to coach by coaching their classmates.

The program continues today for students in day and night MBA programs.

Here are few favorite photographs from their recent awards ceremony. Yes, I took photos of each student posing with their award. But in true photojournalistic fashion, my real focus was on the bigger story.

Cindy by the Numbers

When I was a kid I enjoyed all sorts of art projects and games.

My Dad took home movies at Christmas. And in two separate movies, one when I was about 4 or 5, and another when I was 6 or 7, you can see me running to the tree to pick up an Etch-A-Sketch. (Santa didn’t wrap presents at our house, so we got to run to our favorite gift right out of the gate.)

spirograph

Another artsy favorite was the Spiro Graph. It was the perfect toy for a math nerdy artsy child. If you’ve never tried one, you’re missing out on one of life’s great pleasures.

And a third favorites was paint by numbers.

No, it’s not as creative as the other two, but I always wanted to see how the image came to life based on a few numbers placed here an there in the image.

Cindy by the numbers is a new game I’ve created for myself that is purely word-based. No drawings, paintings or photos involved.

And here’s how it goes:

Cindy by the Numbers

Number of cities I’ve lived in: 31

Number of bones I’ve broken: 2 or 3

Number of years I’ve been vegetarian or pesce vegetarian: 43

Age Roux was when we adopted him: 6 weeks

Age Roux was when we adopted him: 6 weeks

Number of motorcycles I’ve owned: 3

Number of degrees I’ve earned: 5

Number of pets I’ve had: 7

Age when I started my first paid job: 12

Number of my favorite Bach Brandenburg Concerto: 5

Number of times I’ve totaled a car: 1

Number of years I took piano lessons: 11

Age when i started my first full-time job: 19

Number in my favorite Janis Ian song: 17

Number of Most Improved Player awards I’ve won: 2

Enneagram number: 7

Send me questions I can answer with a number, if you have any.

I Love to Travel ... and Take Selfies

Like a lot of folks I know, I love to travel.

This past year, my wife Sharon and I, took a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico so I could attend a photography workshop and we could enjoy the Dia de los Muertos celebrations.

Yes, I took lots of photos with my real camera, but the cell phone camera was always there ready for a selfie.

Here are a few favorites from the trip.

This selfie was taken in front of a vegan restaurant in Mexico City. We took a taxi across the city, so we could see the Frida Kahlo house. The only problem … about 1000 other people had the same idea.

After a harrowing day at the Mexico City airport and harrowing evening desperately searching for a hotel (because our pre-made reservations fell through,) we ended up in the lovely town of San Augustin, Etla.

CEO of Happiness Speaks at Merit’s EPIC Conference

One of the perks of photographing corporate events is leaving inspired after listening to a motivational speaker. After all, who can’t benefit from a great motivational speech.

Merit Financial hit the inspirational speaker jackpot when they brought in Chris Gardner, author or Pursuit of Happyness, and inspiration for Will Smith’s character in the movie of the same name.

My challenge as a photographer was to capture at least one signature shot showing Gardner with storytelling context, like the one above.

After that, I knew I needed some tighter shots of Gardner gesturing, so you can see he’s making a connection with his audience.

After the speech, I wanted photos of him interacting with his audience.

And, of course, evenone there wanted posed photos with Gardner.

If you’re looking for a corporate event photographer who’s hell bent on telling the story of your event, then give me a call or shoot me an email.
