CEO of Happiness Speaks at Merit’s EPIC Conference

One of the perks of photographing corporate events is leaving inspired after listening to a motivational speaker. After all, who can’t benefit from a great motivational speech.

Merit Financial hit the inspirational speaker jackpot when they brought in Chris Gardner, author or Pursuit of Happyness, and inspiration for Will Smith’s character in the movie of the same name.

My challenge as a photographer was to capture at least one signature shot showing Gardner with storytelling context, like the one above.

After that, I knew I needed some tighter shots of Gardner gesturing, so you can see he’s making a connection with his audience.

After the speech, I wanted photos of him interacting with his audience.

And, of course, evenone there wanted posed photos with Gardner.

Classic Black and White at Emory Med School Alumni Event

Even though a lot of photographers consider event photography boring, I actually find it quite challenging. I use all the skills of a photojournalist that use when photographing a news event or wedding.

Although, in most instances In have less to work with in the way of action or emotion than at a wedding or news event, my goal is always the same: tell the story with visuals that surprise and delight.

Here are a few classic black-and-white edits from an Emory Medical School Alumni event that took place at The Estates on Piedmont in the fall.

In early December, I was called in to take a group photograph for the front of the holiday card that Proof sent out this year. You can see the group photo of the staff (at least the staff who were there that day) at the bottom of this post.

After the big group shot, Chef Vagn wanted a few photos of his fellow chefs.

While at their fabulous new corporate office in West Midtown, I was also asked to photograph members of their staff at work. Here are a few of my favorites:

Jack McBrayer Helps Dementia Spotlight Foundation

Some of you who follow me on Facebook know that I spent lots of time enjoying my Mom's sense of humor and calm spirit before she died of Alzheimer's earlier this year.

I know first hand that those diagnosed with dementia can continue to live a meaningful life full of loving relationships. I actually grew closer to my Mom during the years she lived with Alzheimer's.

Mom learned to play Wii bowling after moving into a memory care facility in Decatur.

That's why I was excited when the folks at the Dementia Spotlight Foundation, whose mission is to help families see past a dementia diagnosis, called to ask me to photograph their fundraiser showcasing Jack McBrayer of 30 Rock.

“With a focus on LIFE before loss, RIGHTS before research, and CARE before cure, we are dedicated to changing perspective and improving life experiences of individuals, families, and communities affected by the increasing and always changing condition of dementia.”

Robin Andrews, one of the co-founders of the foundation, attended high school with McBrayer, who was happy to help raise money for the cause.

Improv comedians from around the southeast joined McBrayer in a series of hilarious skits.

Also present, to help spread the good news that people diagnosed with dementia can continue to live a fulfilling life, were three men living with dementia. One offered a tip for jogging one's memory. Take a selfie.

Members of the audience joined in on the fun.

Those in attendance were given a basic lesson in improv.

Giving Back: Georgia Center for Non-Profits

One of the many things I love about being self-employed is that I can choose to provide my photographic services (free or significantly discounted) to organizations that I believe to be doing good in the world.

One such organization is the Georgia Center for Non-Profits, which provides support for non-profits throughout Georgia.

Education is a cornerstone of the support GNC provides to organizations helping others, so most of the events I photograph for GNC involve educating those who lead and work for non-profits. Here are photographs from an event at The Jewish Federation of Great Atlanta, where issues related to the 2018 federal and state budgets were discussed.
