Best of 2020: Part 3

2020, for all it’s difficulties, was a good year for me, as far a photo contests go. I won 17 from the Wedding Photojournalist Association for photographs I took that year.

Here are a few of my favorites that did not win awards, because we all know, awards are only worth so much.

Cabin Elopement in Blue Ridge, Georgia

Tori and DeLani traveled from Canada and Florida, respectively, to tie the knot.

Due to COVID travel restrictions on travel from the US to Canada, the two were stuck apart from each other. So, they planned a romantic getaway elopement at a rustic cabin near Blue Ridge.

Here are a few favorites from their big day.

Covid Wedding Tips from a Georgia Couple

Erin and Emily’s plans for a large wedding fell through just a few weeks before the March date they had booked. Even after rescheduling, they found themselves still bound by the safety concerns of COVID-19.

So, here are a few things they did.

1) They created a sign that included safety instructions such as: “Thank you for keeping 6 feet distance,” and “We’re not hugging,” and “Thank you for wearing a mask.”

2. They set up chairs by family groups, with members of a single family sitting together, but more than 6 feet from another family seating group.

3. They had masks made to match their color scheme for the day.

4. Masks, in three different sizes, were left in a box near the ceremony seats, so guests could pick one upon entering.

5. Close family members quarantined for 14 days before the wedding, so they could hug and dance together.

Tiny Wedding at Chateau Elan comes with a Big Surprise

When Cynthia first called to tell me that she and her beau were planning a tiny wedding at Chateau Elan, I had no idea what big surprise awaited. I’m not sure Cynthia even knew at that point.

Cynthia and Brian had to postpone their wedding several times due to injuries and COVID-19. By the time the final wedding date came around, Cynthia had cooked up something romantic, fun and beautiful for their wedding day … a carriage ride.

Alex and Esther's Pontoon Boat Exit on Lake Chatuge

Here's Esther's description of her ideal reception:

"We end out on the pier, people stumbling a bit because we're tipsy, and laughing, light our Chinese lanterns, say a small call and response of 'holding you in the light' before we let the lanterns go."

"All the lanterns light easily and don't take long to fill-out, and if something goes wrong and one catches on fire or something, again, it's a funny memorable moment. But no person catches on fire, or if they do we shove them off the pier before they get hurt or we get charged extra for anything from the venue." 

"We let the lanterns go, all squeeze each other with love, then BAM, boat rides up to pier, we swing the doors open, and everyone claps as we say our goodbyes and hop on the boat and zoom off into the lake (where we will circle the lake for a good while, looking at the stars and cuddling, until we come back to the docks right next to wear we zoomed away, and giddily skip to our hotel room, where we take-in how beautiful everything was, and pass out).

Esther's ideal continues: "Everyone peacefully says there goodbyes to each other, lots of hugs and "so nice to get to meet you, welcome to the family" and just a feeling of communal love and that no one was offended or punched anyone."
